9 June 2018 - CSCS Sources & Secrets of Fasting coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Four youthful professionals - Ms Teh Yi Ying (Christian), Ustaz Fathurrahman Dawoed (Muslim), Dr Neo Han Yee (Buddhist) and Ms Thilaga Govendasamy (Hindu), along with the multi-faith audience shared on their respective faiths’ tenets, traditions and benefits of fasting.

The event was hosted and moderated by Senior Minister of State for Defence & Foreign Affairs Dr Maliki Osman who is also the Mayor for South East district. Ambassadors and diplomats from seven countries, including Executive Deputy Chairman of RSIS and Ambassador-at-Large Ong Keng Yong; interfaith leaders and activists; senior civil servants and private sector professionals; academicians and students participated actively in the interfaith forum which takes a non-theological approach.

Evaluating the volatile regional and vulnerable local security environments, Dr Maliki emphasised the importance of continued interfaith engagement for social cohesion and resilience. “… we simply cannot afford to be nonchalant or slack, and we need to be constantly conscious and consistently creating constructive and collaborative programmes to boost our communities’ social and psychological defences”.

The forum was attended mainly by non-Muslims, who accompanied their Muslim friends at the stroke of sunset for the buka puasa (breaking of fast) tradition.
